Rafael Nadal has made it through to the semifinals at Roland Garros. On the verge of tying Bjorn Borg's record of four consecutive French Open titles, Rafa has beaten each of his opponents in straight sets.
And the Spanish clay-courter has done so, notably, in matching sets.
We love the neon-green-on-gray look here, especially how it plays off the red clay. TCL lives to coordinate -- so we appreciate the lengths to which Nadal has gone to match every item he's wearing (except the knee tape).
That said, has there ever been another man on tour this fussy?
Also, dear god, when will he ditch the shortpants? Four years after his first knickers-wearing French Open win, he's still got them on.
There was talk in 2005 that he might popularize the fashion. Why hasn't that happened?
For starters, they aren't comfortable. Not quite as "nut-hugging" as baseball and football pants, these bottoms don't have as much give, either. The knees taper, which might be good should he need a tourniquet but inhibits running, bending and stretching. And despite their Nike origins, they plainly don't wick away sweat. (To see what we mean, check out this gallery.)
Worst of all, they've helped to create tennis' most infamous neurosis -- the Nadal butt-pick. (Click here for the Spaniard's explanation for his peculiar predilection. Go here for Robin Soderling's savage on-court imitation.)
We're all for individual style in sports, but maybe this wasn't the fashion statement Nadal meant to make.
